Diving operations are a key component of the services we offer. We provide scientific diving services using SCUBA equipment, adhering to the HSE’s Scientific and Archaeological Diving ACOP. As a Registered HSE Diving Contractor, Marine EcoSol assembles specialist dive teams tailored to each project’s specific needs. We can provide full teams of divers or individual divers to complement external teams. Additionally, we are members of the Scientific Diving Supervisory Committee (SDSC), the recognised authority for the scientific and archaeological diving sectors in the UK.
All our divers are certified in SCUBA by an internationally recognised organisation and are trained as specialty divers for use of enriched air (Nitrox).
Our core dive team is also qualified in first aid, holding HSE First Aid at Work certifications. The team undergoes pre-season training to ensure cohesive development, along with refreshers in oxygen administration, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and first aid.
Marine EcoSol’s commitment to safety and quality in our diving practices is reflected in our excellent safety record and high levels of customer satisfaction. We prepare and conduct project-specific Dive Plans that detail operational information, and we maintain a network of professional divers to enhance our project capabilities.
We specialise in research, monitoring and survey services across the private and public sectors, giving us a strong insight to the varying needs of a wide range of stakeholders in the marine environment. Our services offer a multidisciplinary approach to our projects, not just across the range of technical fieldwork we deliver, but throughout our project workflows.
Marine EcoSol staff and associates have proven track records in the delivery of multivariate analysis of complex, spatio-temporal community and environmental datasets, GIS mapping, marine habitat biotope classification, Marine Recorder Online data entry and guidance, video and stills image analysis and photogrammetry. We work with regulatory bodies on topics including the design of survey and monitoring programmes, method development, statutory site conservation status and natural capital value. With private partners we have worked to ensure compliance with both pre-application and operational licence conditions are met, provide representation at regulatory meetings and have provided consultancy on the ecological impacts of fisheries and coastal developments.
Marine surveys often include the requirement for quality imagery obtained either as still images or video and increasingly, photogrammetry – the latter involves the reconstruction of seabed habitats and features from individual images to create 3-dimensional, digital models and high-resolution, 2-dimensional orthomosaics that can be integrated into GIS outputs. Marine EcoSol team members are experienced in recording high quality still images and video in HD or 4K in a wide range of underwater conditions for the purposes of documenting habitats and species and for later image analysis.
We have successfully used photogrammetry on projects to repeatedly document survey sites in dark or turbid conditions that would otherwise be almost impossible to accurately visualise in situ or in a single image. We have created models of long-term monitoring sites maintained by Natural Resources Wales to facilitate the efficient maintenance and survey of the sites by enabling divers to re-acquaint themselves with a site prior to diving. The technique enables the exact locations to be monitored repeatedly over time to demonstrate and quantify community and/or physical changes on the seabed.
Photogrammetry enables us to bring the survey location to you. Using high-definition cameras with top-of-the-range lighting systems we can produce high-quality, detailed models. This means any survey site can be re-visited back in the office time after time to check data, ask new questions and show non-divers the habitats, communities and species being monitored.
