The Team
Joint Director of Marine EcoSol with Kate Northen, Matt has 18 years of marine consulting and survey experience. Matt has provided consultancy support to many marine sectors including fisheries, aquaculture, transport, coastal power (nuclear, gas and coal) and aggregates, as well as providing survey support and advice to regulatory agencies including Natural England, Natural Resources Wales and NatureScot. Further to this, Matt has also worked with conservation organisations to improve public perception of the UK’s diverse marine environment. Matt works closely with clients to build lasting, long-term working relationships with high-quality project outputs.
Matt has been diving for over 27 years and, together with Marine EcoSol and its team of scientific divers and marine surveyors, provides survey design and delivery services to clients the length and breadth of the UK. Matt is also highly experienced in the design and delivery of intertidal and subtidal benthic and fish surveys as well as image analysis – this experience has been instrumental in providing project outputs that are fit-for-purpose and ensuring clients’ compliance with licence conditions.
Outside of work Matt enjoys spending time with his family and friends, running, gardening and developing his own diving projects.

Northen
Principle Ecologist
Kate studied Marine Biology and Zoology at Bangor University, where she discovered her passion for SCUBA diving. She began her career at JNCC, advisors to government on nature conservation, surveying Britain’s coastal waters as part of the Marine Nature Conservation Review. During this time, she explored diverse marine communities across the UK and gained expertise as a rocky reef community specialist. She also helped develop the Infralittoral section of the Marine Habitat Classification for Britain and Ireland.
In the early 2000s she worked at CCW (now NRW), overseeing the establishment of Conservation Objective & Advice on Activities for the Welsh Suite of SACs and the formation of the monitoring protocols of subtidal reefs. Since then, Kate has worked as a freelance marine benthic ecologist, conducting surveys across England, Wales, and Scotland.
Currently, as a director at Marine Ecosol, she enjoys collaborating with a team of like-minded professionals on a wide range of environmental projects.
Outside of work, she spends time with her children, explores the outdoors, and pursues her love of nature photography. Her diving adventures have taken her around the world, from Thailand and Sri Lanka to Egypt and the Pitcairn Islands.
